The mouth, a mucosa-lined cavity, is also called the oral cavity, or buccal cavity. Its boundaries are the lips anteriorly, cheeks laterally, palate superiorly, and tongue inferiorly (Figure). Its anterior opening is the oral orifice.
Posteriorly, the oral cavity is continuous with the oropharynx. The walls of the mouth are lined with stratified squamous epithelium which can withstand a lot of friction. The epithelium on the gums, hard palate, and dorsum of the tongue is slightly keratinized for extra protection against abrasion during eating. Like all moist surface linings, the oral mucosa responds to injury by producing antimicrobial peptides called defensins. These substances prevent the mouth, ( which is a site full of disease-causing microbes) to remain healthy.
